Emily stepped between Gary and Martha, spreading her arms despite her pregnancy. “Leave her alone, you criminal,” she shouted, her voice trembling but firm.

Gary looked surprised for only a moment. Then he grabbed the collar of Emily’s pink dress and violently pulled her forward while Martha cried out.
