Chapter 3 - She Organized This
Frank stared at the gathering crowd and demanded to know who had invited everyone. Claire remained silent until Rose slowly stood beside the marble bench.
“I did,” Rose answered. Frank turned toward the retired librarian whose wrist was swelling and finally realized these people were not random hotel guests.
They were clients and former clients of Mercer Senior Capital: retirees, widows, couples, and families who had trusted Frank with their financial security.
During the previous month, Rose had quietly contacted several people after discovering she was not alone in questioning unexplained fees, transfers, and increasingly aggressive demands.
Claire helped organize a meeting where those clients could compare experiences and speak with an independent financial attorney without Mercer Senior Capital controlling the conversation.
The meeting was supposed to happen upstairs. Frank apparently learned Rose would be inside the hotel and intercepted her before she reached the conference room.
Now nearly everyone attending that meeting had witnessed him shove Rose while demanding her signature on documents transferring control of her condominium.
An eighty-two-year-old man stepped forward and said Frank had pressured him similarly, claiming his retirement account would collapse unless he transferred rental property.
A widow raised her phone and explained Frank had given her forty-eight hours to act. Another retiree said every financial decision somehow became an emergency.
Frank accused Claire of organizing everyone against him. Claire glanced toward Rose and corrected him. “No, Frank. She organized this. I only helped.”
Rose looked directly at Frank. He had repeatedly warned clients not to discuss financial matters with outsiders because supposedly doing so could jeopardize their investments.
“That made me wonder why,” Rose said. Frank had depended upon secrecy, urgency, and isolation. Now his clients were comparing the stories he gave each one.
Police and paramedics arrived minutes later. Hotel security preserved surveillance footage while witnesses provided contact information and Rose was taken for examination of her injured wrist.
