Chapter 2 - This Stopped Being Private Weeks Ago

Frank reached around Claire toward the unsigned documents. She backed away, removed a small pepper-spray canister from her purse, and warned him not to approach.

Frank laughed and lunged toward the papers anyway. Claire discharged the spray toward his face, then immediately stepped backward while Frank screamed and covered his eyes.

Hotel security rushed across the lobby. Claire lowered the spray and told them to call emergency services because Frank had assaulted Rose moments earlier.

Frank demanded Claire’s arrest for attacking him. A security supervisor separated everyone while Claire knelt beside Rose and saw swelling beginning around her injured wrist.

Frank continued shouting that everything was a private financial matter. Claire stood, opened a leather folder, and told him the situation had stopped being private weeks earlier.

She removed a preliminary forensic accounting report. Frank stared through watering eyes and demanded to know what she possessed. “The audit,” Claire answered.

Three months earlier, Rose mentioned that her retirement statements no longer made sense. Claire listened carefully because financial records happened to be her professional specialty.

Claire was a CPA with twelve years of experience in corporate compliance and forensic accounting. She did not immediately accuse Frank of criminal behavior.

Instead, she advised Rose to stop signing documents, contact an independent attorney, and begin collecting account statements, transfer authorizations, emails, and marketing materials.

The deeper they examined Rose’s records, the more troubling things became. Money supposedly placed into conservative investments appeared to move through several affiliated entities.

Some companies shared addresses, while others appeared to have little obvious independent activity. Their attorney advised reporting concerns rather than personally confronting Frank.

Frank had no idea those steps had already occurred. When Claire mentioned authorities asking questions, his confidence disappeared and his attention shifted toward the hotel doors.

Then Frank noticed dozens of people standing near the ballroom entrance, many holding phones and watching every movement he made inside the lobby.
