Chapter 5 - Millie's Grill
Some diverted funds had financed personal purchases Susan knew nothing about. She hired her own attorney as both the business partnership and marriage began unraveling.
Employees also came forward describing Mike withholding tips, changing time records, and humiliating workers who questioned his decisions. Relevant records went to professional review.
Arthur deliberately stayed outside those investigations. He was neither a prosecutor nor accountant, and owning the building did not make him judge of Mike’s conduct.
Two months later, Susan purchased Mike’s ownership interest in the diner as part of their separation arrangements and began rebuilding the struggling restaurant independently.
She negotiated a new lease with Arthur. Together they agreed to restore the building’s old restaurant name, transforming Dawson’s Diner back into Millie’s Grill.
Arthur kept booth number six exactly where it had always been. There was no reserved sign, plaque, velvet rope, or special treatment attached to it.
Susan simply placed an old photograph nearby showing a younger Arthur and Helen together, smiling inside the restaurant long before either had imagined losing the other.
On Veterans Day, Susan hosted breakfast for local veterans. Arthur arrived early wearing the same olive military jacket, though the coffee stain never completely disappeared.
Susan approached his booth carrying a fresh cup. Halfway toward the table, both noticed what she was holding and remembered their first terrible confrontation.
“Too soon?” Susan asked awkwardly. Arthur laughed. “Probably.” She gently placed the cup before him and promised, “No throwing.” Arthur smiled. “I appreciate that.”
Later, a young server asked whether Arthur really purchased the building on the same morning Mike threw coffee over him. Arthur confirmed that strange coincidence.
“So Mike humiliated the man who owned his restaurant?” the server asked. Arthur corrected him immediately. “The building. I owned the building, not his restaurant.”
