Chapter 3 - Ask Your Wife Who Owns the Building
For nearly two years, Mike had routed certain event deposits and miscellaneous payments away from the diner’s normal operating account without Susan fully understanding what was happening.
Susan did not yet know the complete amount. That was precisely why the accountant was upstairs examining statements when Mike confronted Arthur before everyone.
Mike looked around at the watching customers and declared the finances were nobody else’s business. Arthur straightened his soaked jacket and finally challenged that claim.
“You made it their business when you threw coffee at me.” Mike pointed toward the entrance and again ordered Arthur to leave his restaurant immediately.
Arthur remained still. Mike laughed bitterly. “What are you waiting for? This is my restaurant.” For the first time that afternoon, Arthur smiled slightly.
“Restaurant? Maybe,” Arthur answered. Then he looked toward Susan. “But ask your wife who owns the building.” Mike turned toward her in confusion.
Susan reluctantly explained that Dawson’s Diner had struggled financially for almost two years because of rising food costs, outstanding loans, and increasing operating expenses.
Mike owned the restaurant business, but not the property beneath it. Dawson’s Diner leased the building from an outside commercial real-estate investment partnership.
That partnership had recently decided to sell. Susan discovered the proposed transaction while reviewing notices sent to the business and repeatedly tried informing Mike.
Mike ignored those conversations while focusing on other financial problems. The property sale had officially closed that very morning before Arthur entered the diner.
Mike looked toward Arthur and whispered, “No.” Arthur reached into his pocket and removed a brass key carrying a new property-management tag.
The tag read BENNETT FAMILY PROPERTIES. Arthur held it between his fingers and calmly said, “I bought this place this morning.” The diner became completely silent.
Mike laughed in disbelief and asked how an old veteran with a modest house and pickup truck could possibly afford purchasing commercial property like this.
