Chapter 2 - He Doesn't Owe Us
Susan Dawson rushed into the dining room from the upstairs office, where Mike’s forty-eight-year-old wife had been meeting privately with the diner’s accountant.
She stopped when she saw Arthur’s soaked jacket and coffee across the floor. “What happened?” she asked before turning slowly toward her husband.
Mike waved the $8,400 invoice and claimed he was finally dealing with Arthur’s unpaid debt. Susan’s expression changed immediately. “You threw coffee on him?”
Mike insisted Arthur had provoked him. Arthur explained that he merely asked for a private conversation. Susan closed her eyes before quietly saying her husband’s name.
“He owes us money,” Mike argued. Susan took the invoice from his hand. “No, Mike. He doesn’t.” Her answer silenced everyone around the counter.
Months earlier, while organizing the diner’s financial records, Susan discovered that the original reunion contract showed a dramatically smaller outstanding balance than Mike claimed.
Several later charges had been manually added without signatures, supporting invoices, or emails showing Arthur ever authorized those new expenses and penalties.
Even worse, part of Arthur’s original payment had been recorded incorrectly. Susan’s accountant calculated that the legitimate disputed amount had actually been below one thousand dollars.
Mike insisted Arthur still had not paid it. Arthur reached inside his wet jacket, but Susan raised her hand, saying he did not need anything else.
Arthur nevertheless produced a copy of an eleven-month-old cashier’s check for $1,126, including what his attorney calculated as reasonable interest on the disputed balance.
Susan studied the check and confirmed it exceeded what Arthur legitimately owed. When Mike accused him of lying, Arthur calmly said the bank could verify payment.
“It was deposited,” Susan said. Arthur asked whether it entered the diner’s operating account. Susan slowly shook her head. “No. A separate account.”
Mike’s expression changed instantly because Susan had discovered that hidden account only that morning, while the accountant upstairs was reviewing where the money had gone.
