Chapter 4 - The Betrayal That Hurt More
Frank’s arrest did not magically resolve everything. The investigation continued for months as authorities examined emails, financial transfers, agreements, and communications involving Dawson Development and Jason.
Jason eventually cooperated with investigators. He admitted accepting money while signing documents involving property he knew he had no legal authority to sell.
Evidence also showed Jason created misleading correspondence suggesting Rose supported the transaction, hoping nobody would examine the trust structure closely enough to discover the truth.
Frank’s defense maintained that Jason misled him and that Frank believed any technical defects could eventually be corrected after Dawson Development secured control of the project.
Prosecutors focused instead on messages suggesting Frank knew serious legal questions existed and continued pushing forward because delaying could give Rose time to intervene.
While the criminal proceedings moved slowly, the civil property dispute ended much faster. Dawson Development had acquired no valid ownership interest in Bennett Orchard.
Without the orchard, Frank’s proposed development collapsed. Investors withdrew, financing disappeared, and Frank resigned from the company he had spent twenty-three years building.
Rose never celebrated his downfall. Frank had treated her cruelly, but Jason’s betrayal cut deeper because she had known her sister’s son since his birth.
When Jason eventually requested a meeting, Rose agreed only with attorneys present. He admitted shame over his debts had driven him toward increasingly desperate decisions.
“I never thought it would go this far,” Jason said. Rose answered quietly, “You signed papers involving land you knew wasn’t yours. How far did you expect?”
Jason admitted he could have asked relatives for help but felt humiliated by his financial problems. Rose reminded him that shame did not transfer ownership.
Rose did not forgive Jason during that meeting. She listened, however, understanding that hearing someone accept responsibility could be a beginning without becoming an ending.
