Chapter 5 - He Was Prepared
One evening, Jessica and Rose sat together on the porch while Rex slept between their chairs. Rose again whispered that she had been incredibly stupid.
“He spent weeks studying you,” Jessica answered. Rose reminded her that she still handed Gary the cash. “Because he manufactured an emergency,” Jessica replied.
Rose insisted she should have recognized the scam. Jessica shook her head. “You weren’t stupid. He was prepared, and he deliberately made you afraid.”
Then Rose challenged Jessica about her own behavior. “You shouldn’t have fought him.” Jessica touched the fading bruise on her shoulder and admitted Rose was right.
Jessica had reacted from anger when she kicked Gary. Once the knife appeared, she realized confronting him physically was no longer useful or remotely worth the risk.
Rose glanced toward the sleeping German Shepherd. “That dog had better judgment than both of us.” Rex opened one eye as Jessica began laughing.
The family changed its financial safeguards afterward. Rose enabled withdrawal alerts and added Michael as a trusted contact who could help verify suspicious requests.
They created a simple family rule: unexpected demands involving money, secrecy, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or urgent transfers would always be independently verified before anyone acted.
Rose eventually told the story to her church’s senior group. At first, describing how completely Gary fooled her made every meeting uncomfortable and embarrassing.
After one presentation, another woman approached Rose and explained she had received an almost identical telephone call just days after hearing Rose’s warning.
The woman remembered Rose’s story, ended the call, and contacted her bank directly through a verified number. No fake representative ever reached her front door.
That conversation changed something for Rose. What Gary had used to make her feel ashamed could now become information helping another person recognize the same trap.
