Daniel helped clean gravy from Margaret’s sweater before noticing a small suitcase beside the front door. He immediately asked why his mother had brought luggage.

Vanessa answered before Margaret could speak. “She’s moving.” Daniel slowly turned toward his mother, confused because she had never mentioned leaving her apartment.

Margaret reluctantly explained that her landlord had sold the building and she needed to move out by Friday. She had not wanted to burden Daniel.

Vanessa laughed without humor. “And there it is.” She claimed Margaret had attended dinner because she expected Daniel to solve another financial problem for her.

Margaret’s face fell. “No. I came because Daniel invited me.” Vanessa challenged Daniel to ask his mother exactly what she wanted from them.

Margaret quietly reached into her purse. Vanessa smiled for one terrible moment, convinced the elderly woman was about to prove every accusation she had made.

Instead, Margaret removed a sealed envelope and handed it to Daniel. She explained that after everything that happened, she had considered leaving without giving it to him.

Daniel opened the envelope and discovered a cashier’s check. He read the amount twice before looking toward his mother with stunned, rapidly filling eyes.

Twenty-five thousand dollars. Vanessa’s satisfied expression disappeared instantly. Margaret explained that she had finally sold the small parcel of land her grandfather left her.

Daniel could not understand why she was giving away the last significant asset connected to her family. Margaret reminded him about their conversation the previous month.

Daniel had admitted Vanessa’s interior design company was struggling after losing two major contracts. He had already invested much of his own savings keeping it operational.
