The plate struck Margaret before she understood what was happening. Mashed potatoes and brown gravy splattered across her faded gray sweater as roasted chicken hit the floor.

Across the elegant dining room, every conversation stopped. Vanessa stood over her sixty-eight-year-old mother-in-law with the empty dinner plate still clenched in one hand.

“Get out of my house,” Vanessa ordered. Margaret’s lips parted, but no words came as nearly twenty dinner guests stared from around the expensive table.

Vanessa pointed toward the front door and repeated herself. Margaret looked down at the food scattered beside her worn shoes, then slowly bent toward the floor.

Her hands trembled as she began gathering pieces of chicken and broken food from the polished hardwood. Vanessa watched her and gave a mocking laugh.

“Oh, please. Don’t start crying now.” Margaret blinked quickly, refusing to let the tears burning behind her eyes fall in front of everyone.

She had taken two buses across town and carried a homemade apple pie because her son Daniel had loved her recipe since he was a boy.

Margaret had spent nearly half her weekly grocery budget buying ingredients. Now the untouched pie sat on the kitchen counter while Vanessa criticized her appearance.

“You show up dressed like that and expect people to pretend you belong at this table?” Vanessa asked. Several guests looked away without defending Margaret.

Quick footsteps suddenly came from the hallway. Daniel had been outside taking a business call, unaware of what had happened while he was gone.

He entered the dining room and froze. His mother’s sweater was covered with gravy, food littered the floor, and Vanessa stood above her smiling.

Daniel’s expression hardened. “What happened?” Vanessa casually answered that Margaret had embarrassed her again, as though the scene required no further explanation.
