Chapter 2 - My Mother Matters

Daniel looked at his wife. “What did you do?” Vanessa admitted ordering Margaret to leave, insisting she needed to understand that circumstances had changed.

“We have clients here,” Vanessa said. “People who actually matter.” Daniel’s jaw tightened as he answered, “My mother matters.” Vanessa rolled her eyes.

She again ordered Margaret outside and reached toward her arm. Daniel stepped between them, and in the heated movement, his hand struck Vanessa’s cheek.

The sound cracked through the room. Vanessa stumbled backward, stunned. Daniel stared at his own hand, breathing hard as Margaret quietly whispered his name.

His anger disappeared immediately. Daniel apologized for striking Vanessa, acknowledging without qualification that hitting her had been wrong, regardless of what had happened moments earlier.

Then he added that Vanessa’s treatment of Margaret was also wrong, and he would no longer pretend years of contempt toward his mother were harmless.

Vanessa accused Margaret of causing problems since their wedding. Margaret lowered her eyes because she had heard similar accusations repeatedly throughout Daniel’s marriage.

Vanessa mocked Margaret’s small apartment, old furniture, neighborhood, secondhand clothes, and modest lifestyle, frequently treating poverty as evidence of personal failure or inferiority.

After Daniel’s father died when Daniel was eleven, Margaret worked mornings in a school cafeteria and nights cleaning offices to keep their household functioning.

She clipped coupons, wore secondhand coats, and sometimes skipped meals. Daniel still ate dinner every night and never missed school activities because she lacked money.

When Daniel entered college, Margaret sold her late husband’s old pickup truck, the most valuable possession she owned, to help cover his first year.

Vanessa knew almost none of that history. Whether because nobody explained it or because she never cared enough to ask, Margaret had simply remained “poor” to her.
