Chapter 5 - Give Thomas His Place Back
The following week, Ethan asked VFW leadership to correct Robert’s memorial display rather than remove everything associated with his father or diminish his legitimate accomplishments.
The old newspaper clipping remained as part of the historical record, but a new plaque beside it explained what actually happened during the training accident.
Thomas Reed’s photograph was placed beside Robert’s. For the first time in decades, visitors could see the forgotten soldier connected to the famous rescue.
Ethan decided Thomas’s medal should not become another display piece. Instead, he searched surviving family records and located Thomas’s niece living in Pennsylvania.
She drove down after learning that Ethan possessed one of her uncle’s personal decorations. Her family had almost nothing belonging to Thomas after his death.
When Chloe placed the medal into her hands, the woman began crying and whispered that she had never before held anything that belonged to Uncle Tom.
Martha remained several feet away, visibly struggling with what to say. Eventually, she approached Thomas’s niece and offered a quiet apology without defending herself.
When the woman asked what required forgiveness, Martha answered honestly. “For letting people forget him when I knew what had really happened all along.”
Nothing collapsed after those words. Robert’s photograph remained displayed, his legitimate decorations remained documented, and veterans continued remembering everything he had actually accomplished.
Thomas simply regained the place that should never have been taken from him. Restoring his courage did not require destroying Robert’s service or reputation.
Martha later apologized to Chloe for throwing beer and shoving her. Chloe accepted the apology but established boundaries that Martha could no longer misunderstand.
There would be no more physical intimidation or using grief as permission to control people. If Martha crossed that boundary again, Chloe and Ethan would leave.
