Chapter 4 - Dad Didn't Need Thomas's Story

Chloe finally understood Martha’s reaction to the jacket. After Robert died, Martha discovered Thomas’s medal among several old letters and immediately panicked about their existence.

The medal did not prove Robert had stolen another soldier’s military record. His rank, decorations, and twenty-seven years of honorable service were entirely legitimate.

But it connected Robert directly to Thomas and threatened one celebrated story that Martha had allowed the community to attribute incorrectly to her husband.

Rather than face questions, Martha hid the medal inside Robert’s jacket. An innocent misunderstanding had gradually transformed into a carefully protected family legend.

“The real hero that day wasn’t who you told everyone,” Chloe said. Martha flinched while Ethan turned toward his father’s photograph with devastated eyes.

“Then Dad wasn’t a hero?” Ethan asked. Walter immediately corrected him, explaining that one false story could never erase twenty-seven honorable years of service.

Robert helped veterans find employment, raised money for struggling families, and spent countless evenings supporting former soldiers who were frightened about returning to civilian life.

“But Thomas saved Robert that day,” Walter said. Ethan slowly understood that both truths about his father and Thomas could exist without contradicting each other.

Robert never needed Thomas’s courage to make his own life meaningful. That was precisely what made Martha’s decades of protecting the false story unnecessary.

Martha admitted she feared correcting the record would humiliate Robert, damage their family’s reputation, and weaken fundraising efforts associated with his respected name.

Instead, preserving Robert’s image had erased Thomas from an act of courage that belonged to him, even though Robert’s genuine accomplishments required no exaggeration.

Chloe looked at her beer-soaked jacket. Martha had publicly attacked her because protecting an unnecessary lie still mattered more than confronting an uncomfortable truth.
