Chapter 5 - I Wanted Him to Leave You

Nearly a year passed before Martha asked Alice to meet her. Alice agreed only after choosing a busy coffee shop where neither woman controlled the environment.

Martha appeared smaller somehow, stripped of the confidence she once carried inside her own kitchen. She folded her hands and said, “I owe you an apology.”

Alice waited. Martha explained that she had been terrified of losing David after spending much of his childhood believing their bond would always come first.

“That explains why you were afraid,” Alice said carefully. Martha nodded. “It doesn’t explain why I hit you.” Alice quietly agreed with her.

Martha swallowed hard. “And it doesn’t excuse it.” For once, she did not mention stress, misunderstandings, Alice’s personality, or anything David supposedly should have done.

Then Martha admitted the ugliest truth. She had intentionally tried making Alice appear unstable because she believed David would eventually become exhausted and leave his wife.

Hearing those words hurt Alice, but they also ended months of self-doubt. She had repeatedly wondered whether she had exaggerated Martha’s hostility or misunderstood harmless criticism.

Alice had questioned whether being quieter, kinder, more obedient, or more accommodating could have prevented everything. Martha’s confession finally answered that question completely.

Martha reached across the coffee-shop table. Alice did not take her hand. Forgiveness, she understood, was not an obligation created simply because someone finally apologized.

But Alice stayed seated. That was all she could honestly offer, and Martha accepted the boundary without demanding reassurance or immediate restoration of their relationship.

Counseling continued. Frank eventually returned home under conditions of his own, while David maintained boundaries without forcing Alice to become responsible for his relationship with Martha.

The Carter family did not return to normal. Instead, they began discovering that “normal” had included years of silence, avoidance, manipulation, and fear of confrontation.
