Martha stared at David. “You’re choosing her over your mother?” David looked directly at her. “I’m choosing my wife over someone who just assaulted her.”

Martha insisted she would always be his mother. David agreed, but reminded her that being his mother did not give her permission to hurt his wife.

She pointed toward the ruined turkey and accused them of destroying Thanksgiving. Frank looked down at the food scattered across the kitchen tile.

“Thanksgiving wasn’t destroyed by a turkey,” Frank said. Then he removed his wedding ring and carefully placed it on the counter beside the roasting pan.

Martha’s eyes widened. Frank explained he needed time away from their marriage. When she asked whether he was leaving because of Alice, he answered, “Because of you.”

Alice and David spent Thanksgiving inside a twenty-four-hour diner, eating turkey sandwiches and sharing pumpkin pie while families celebrated together at surrounding tables.

David barely spoke until he finally looked at Alice and said, “I failed you.” She reminded him that he had never physically hurt her.

“I kept asking you to be patient with someone who was hurting you,” David answered. “I wanted peace so badly that I made it your responsibility.”

That was the first apology Alice truly believed. She did not demand David permanently remove Martha from his life, but she established boundaries that would not be negotiated.

Alice would never again remain alone with Martha. Martha could not enter their home without invitation, and nobody could call Thanksgiving a simple misunderstanding.
