For weeks, Martha had told relatives that Alice screamed at her, insulted her, and deliberately tried separating David from everyone who had loved him first.

Aunt Rebecca believed those stories. Martha’s sister believed them too. Even David occasionally wondered whether both women contributed equally to their increasingly poisonous relationship.

Now David looked at Alice and quietly asked how long his mother had treated her this way. Alice answered without hesitation. “Since our honeymoon.”

Six months. David lowered himself into a chair while Alice unlocked her phone. The Thanksgiving video was not the only evidence she had quietly preserved.

There were messages, voicemails, a recording from the laundry room, and another from the garage. Martha’s voice was unmistakable in every one of them.

“You’ll never last with him,” Martha said in one recording. Another captured her confidently telling Alice, “He always comes back to me.”

David stared at his mother. Martha’s anger returned immediately. “So now everyone is against me?” Frank sighed and said nobody was discussing sides.
