Chapter 5 - The Real Medal

On the second anniversary of Ryan’s death, Maya contacted Barbara and asked her to meet privately at the same VFW hall where their confrontation occurred.

There was no memorial crowd this time. The familiar tables were empty when Maya placed a small blue velvet box between herself and Barbara.

Barbara opened it slowly. Inside rested Ryan’s genuine medal, with every familiar scratch and worn edge exactly where she remembered them from her son’s hands.

Her fingers began trembling. “You brought it,” she whispered. Maya nodded. “I told you that you could see it when I was ready.”

Barbara stared at the medal without immediately reaching for it. After several silent seconds, she finally asked Maya, “May I touch it?”

Maya nodded. Barbara lifted the medal carefully and held it between both hands. For almost a minute, neither woman said anything about Ryan.

Then Barbara returned it to the velvet box. She admitted something she had been unable to say during all their arguments after her son’s death.

“I thought if you had his things, eventually everyone would forget I was his mother,” Barbara said, keeping her eyes fixed on the medal.

Maya closed the box gently. “And I thought if I gave you everything, eventually there would be nothing left that belonged to our marriage.”

Barbara finally understood that Maya had not protected Ryan’s medal because she wanted to defeat his mother. She was protecting her own place in his life.

Maya understood something too. Barbara’s behavior had been unacceptable, but beneath the control was a grieving mother desperately trying to stop another piece of Ryan disappearing.

They did not excuse each other’s mistakes. Instead, they finally named the fear underneath them, allowing grief to exist without turning memory into ownership.
