Chapter 3 - That Isn't Ryan's Medal

Barbara stared at the medal resting inside Maya’s hands. Suddenly, her expression changed as she noticed something about its scratches, discoloration, and worn outer edge.

“Wait,” Barbara whispered. She stepped closer and studied it carefully. “That isn’t Ryan’s medal.” Maya tightened her fingers around the tarnished metal before answering.

Barbara knew every imperfection on her son’s original medal. The one Maya had been wearing looked nearly identical, but Barbara was certain it was different.

“You replaced it,” Barbara said. Maya exhaled and admitted the medal was a reproduction. The genuine one remained protected inside a bank safe-deposit box.

Three months earlier, Barbara had entered Maya’s home using an old spare key and removed several boxes containing items that once belonged to Ryan.

Barbara called those possessions family property. Maya called the unauthorized entry trespassing. The boxes were eventually returned after lawyers became involved in their dispute.

Afterward, Maya stopped keeping Ryan’s irreplaceable belongings inside the house. She wore a reproduction because she feared Barbara might attempt to seize the original.

Barbara laughed bitterly and accused Maya of deliberately setting a trap with witnesses. Maya shook her head, visibly exhausted by the accusation.

“I wanted to attend Ryan’s memorial dinner without being afraid you would steal something from my neck,” Maya said. The room became painfully silent.

Michael explained that the temporary restrictions were not punishment for Barbara wanting reminders of Ryan. They addressed repeated unwanted contact and confrontations after boundaries were established.

He gestured toward the broken chain lying near Maya’s shoes. What everyone had just witnessed demonstrated precisely why those boundaries had become necessary.

Then seventy-one-year-old veteran Frank Dawson rose from his table. He had known Ryan since childhood and had served years earlier with Ryan’s father.

“Barbara,” Frank said quietly, “you think Maya having Ryan’s belongings means she’s erasing you.” Barbara turned toward him, her eyes already filling with tears.
