Chapter 2 - He Was My Husband
“You came here wearing my son’s medal like a costume,” Barbara accused. Several veterans visibly reacted while Maya’s eyes filled with angry, exhausted tears.
“He was my husband,” Maya answered. Barbara shouted that Ryan had been her son. Maya’s voice cracked. “Yes, but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t his wife.”
Before Barbara could grab the medal again, a man’s voice called her name. Everyone turned toward attorney Michael Harris standing near the entrance with a leather folder.
Maya recognized Michael immediately. He had handled Ryan’s estate after his death. Barbara frowned and demanded to know why he had come to the memorial dinner.
Michael approached and handed Barbara an envelope containing formal notice of a protective order entered that morning, establishing temporary restrictions while their dispute was reviewed.
Barbara stared at Maya and accused her of publicly humiliating Ryan’s mother. Michael calmly explained previous attempts to resolve their repeated contact problems had failed.
“She stole my son’s property,” Barbara shouted. Michael opened his folder and removed Ryan’s will, explaining that its instructions regarding his military belongings were unusually specific.
Ryan had left his personal military effects to Maya, including his medals, dog tags, uniforms, and deployment journals. Those possessions legally belonged to his wife.
Barbara had not been forgotten. Ryan separately left her family photographs, childhood belongings, his grandfather’s watch, and several personal letters written specifically for his mother.
“He would never do this,” Barbara insisted. Michael explained that he had witnessed the estate documents and discussed those exact provisions privately with Ryan beforehand.
Then Michael revealed something more painful. Ryan loved his mother deeply, but he worried Barbara would fight Maya over his belongings if anything happened overseas.
Barbara’s face changed. “My son actually said that?” Michael quietly confirmed it. Barbara immediately accused Maya of turning Ryan against his own family.
Maya shook her head. “Ryan loved you until the day he died. He protected our marriage because you kept treating it like something temporary.”
