Chapter 5 - You Were Wrong Before the White Coat
Hannah did not throw Brenda onto the street or call police to remove embarrassed relatives. She simply announced that the celebration was officially over.
When Brenda complained about the expensive food, Hannah calmly suggested taking it. Guests quietly collected their belongings while conversations dissolved into uncomfortable whispers around the garden.
Mark insisted the mansion remained his home too. Hannah acknowledged that he currently lived there and said attorneys would handle property access and separation appropriately.
That was exactly what followed. The divorce required months, as did the professional review involving Mark, with formal procedures replacing the emotional accusations from the party.
Some allegations concerning Mark’s academic work were eventually substantiated while others were not. Any consequences resulted through institutional processes rather than Hannah’s personal authority.
Vanessa ended her relationship with Mark almost immediately. When he insisted he had intended to leave Hannah, Vanessa shook her head at the familiar explanation.
“That seems to be how you explain everything,” Vanessa told him. Mark had continually described future intentions whenever someone confronted him about his present dishonesty.
Nearly a year later, Brenda asked Hannah to meet at a coffee shop. She admitted believing Hannah had been beneath Mark and acknowledged she had been wrong.
“Because you’re more successful than I realized,” Brenda added. Hannah immediately shook her head. “No. You were wrong before you ever saw that white coat.”
Hannah explained she could genuinely have cleaned houses every day. Nothing about that occupation would have justified throwing lemonade at her or ordering her to kneel.
Brenda lowered her eyes. She finally understood that discovering Hannah’s career had not transformed cruelty into a mistake. The cruelty had always been the mistake.
“I’m sorry,” Brenda whispered without mentioning Hannah’s résumé, property, marriage, or Mark. Hannah did not forgive everything, but finally believed Brenda understood her apology.
