Hannah unfolded the white coat. Embroidered across its chest were her full name, academic credentials, and the name of a medical research program affiliated with Harvard.

She slipped it on. Brenda laughed nervously and asked whether Hannah had purchased a costume, but Vanessa’s expression had already changed completely.

Vanessa stepped closer and quietly asked, “Dr. Hannah Whitmore?” Hannah confirmed her identity. Mark stared between them, demanding to know how Vanessa recognized his wife.

“Everyone in our research program knows her,” Vanessa answered. “She supervised Professor Harris’s clinical research group.” Mark immediately stopped smiling at Hannah.

Professor Andrew Harris had overseen part of Mark’s fellowship training. Hannah clarified that she supervised Harris’s research program rather than his separate teaching responsibilities.

Brenda demanded an explanation. Hannah reminded her that she had never claimed to work professionally as a housekeeper, despite what Brenda repeatedly told everyone.

Hannah had spent nearly a year helping manage her mother’s residential cleaning company while her mother underwent cancer treatment, continuing her academic responsibilities remotely whenever possible.

Brenda had seen Hannah carrying cleaning supplies twice and decided she understood everything about her. Hannah initially found the assumption too ridiculous to correct.

Later, Hannah stopped correcting Brenda because she wanted to discover how far Mark would allow his mother’s contempt to continue without defending his wife.

The answer had arrived that afternoon. Mark was willing to watch Hannah publicly humiliated because allowing everyone to underestimate her made his own achievements appear greater.

Mark demanded to know why Hannah never explained her career. She reminded him that she had described her medical research work during their third date.

“You stopped asking questions,” Hannah said, “once you decided my mother’s cleaning company explained everything about me.” Mark’s embarrassed expression quickly became anger.
