Hannah reached into the suitcase again and removed a folder containing photographs. One clearly showed Mark kissing Vanessa outside a hotel several weeks earlier.

Another showed them entering together. Vanessa stepped backward and tried speaking, but Hannah stopped her. Mark demanded to know where his wife obtained the photographs.

“You used our shared travel account,” Hannah explained. Brenda stared at Vanessa, insisting she had been told Mark and Vanessa were merely professional friends.

Vanessa looked directly at Mark. “You told me you were separated.” Hannah gave a quiet laugh, recognizing another lie her husband had allowed someone else to believe.

Then Hannah removed another document. Mark’s expression changed immediately because questions had recently arisen regarding research data connected to work submitted during his fellowship.

An internal review had begun weeks earlier. Hannah was not deciding Mark’s case and had formally recused herself once she learned her husband’s work was involved.

The review nevertheless identified possible manipulation within portions of Mark’s research portfolio, alongside separate questions concerning unauthorized assistance during a required assessment process.

Mark accused Hannah of destroying his career because of jealousy. She calmly reminded him that she had no role whatsoever on the final review panel.

He turned desperately toward Vanessa. She could barely meet his eyes. “I told them the truth,” she admitted, and Mark’s confidence disappeared completely.

The investigation had not erased Mark’s medical degree. That credential came from another institution years earlier and could not simply disappear during a garden confrontation.

However, his fellowship credential had been withheld pending formal review, and appropriate professional and academic bodies had received concerns requiring independent consideration under established procedures.

Hannah pointed toward the framed ceremonial certificate Mark had proudly displayed. “That piece of paper on your gift table does not override the investigation.”
