Chapter 2 - You Made It Everyone's Matter
Sarah touched her burning cheek and whispered that she did not know whether the baby was hurt. Daniel’s face went pale before he confronted his mother.
Martha insisted Sarah attacked first by pushing her into the fountain. Daniel looked toward the watching guests, silently asking them what had actually happened.
One of Sarah’s friends explained that Martha threw the drink first. Another confirmed Martha repeatedly tried touching Sarah after being clearly told to stop.
Martha dismissed everything as a private family matter. Daniel helped Sarah stand and answered, “No, Mom. You made it everyone’s matter.”
Furious, Martha pointed toward the enormous brick mansion behind them and declared Sarah would never receive the house, family investments, or any Whitmore inheritance.
Before Sarah could answer, a car horn sounded near the front gate. A black sedan stopped outside, and a silver-haired man emerged carrying a leather portfolio.
Daniel recognized Andrew Collins, the attorney who had represented the Whitmore family for nearly twenty years. Martha demanded to know why he had arrived.
Andrew explained that someone had asked him to come. When Martha demanded a name, he looked toward Daniel and answered, “Your father.”
Robert Whitmore had died eight months earlier after a long battle with cancer. During his final year, Martha supposedly handled most of his important appointments.
Andrew opened his portfolio and said they needed to discuss the property. Martha refused, declaring the mansion was her home and today was inappropriate.
“Actually, today would be helpful,” Andrew replied. Then he carefully explained something Martha clearly had never expected to hear in front of the family.
“The property deed is no longer in your name.” Martha stared at him, stunned, before insisting the house unquestionably belonged to her.
Andrew corrected her. Robert had transferred his ownership interest before his death as part of a carefully prepared and independently reviewed estate plan.
