Chapter 5 - Something Daniel Left Me
Near the bottom of the letter, Barbara wrote the sentence Maya reread several times: “I treated Noah like something Daniel left me instead of someone you were raising.”
Maya kept the apology but did not respond immediately. Words mattered, yet they could not erase the school incident, airport assault, or weeks of intimidation.
Nearly a year passed. Barbara attended counseling, followed every court restriction, and stopped asking relatives or mutual friends to pressure Maya into restoring contact.
Eventually, after consulting her attorney and considering Noah’s feelings, Maya agreed to one supervised video call between Barbara and the little boy she still missed.
Noah excitedly showed Barbara a science project he had built for school. She listened carefully without interrupting him or asking when he was returning to Virginia.
Barbara did not call him “my boy.” She made no promises about visits and asked nothing about Maya’s plans. Instead, she simply praised his project.
“Daniel would have loved that,” Barbara said softly. Noah smiled at the screen and answered, “So do I.” Maya quietly watched from several feet away.
For the first time since Daniel’s death, Barbara spoke about her son without turning Noah into his replacement. Remembering Daniel no longer required possessing someone else.
Afterward, Maya stood beside the kitchen window holding the protective order she once carried everywhere because she feared Barbara might unexpectedly appear again.
She realized she no longer needed to prove Daniel’s place in their lives. His photographs remained in Noah’s room, exactly where they had always been.
Daniel’s old baseball cap still hung beside the door. They celebrated his birthday and told stories about his pancakes, terrible singing, and patient bedtime routines.
Maya had never planned to erase Daniel. Moving forward did not mean abandoning the people they had loved or pretending their years together never happened.
