Chapter 4 - Every Woman Got a Different Story
Ryan claimed he had only been trying to keep everyone calm. Laura laughed bitterly and asked how lying to every woman in his life accomplished that.
He blamed problems inside his marriage, insisting he feared losing everything if Laura discovered Megan and their daughter. Laura answered, “Then you should have left.”
Megan shook her head. Ryan had responded to fear by constructing another life rather than ending the first honestly, leaving both women living inside manufactured realities.
Evelyn looked toward the torn checks. Ryan insisted the child benefited from her money, but Evelyn reminded him every dollar had supposedly been requested for her granddaughter.
That silence exposed another problem. During the following weeks, Evelyn’s attorney reviewed three years of transfers and compared Ryan’s explanations with actual financial records.
Some money genuinely supported Megan’s home and their daughter’s expenses. Thousands more, however, went toward hotels, credit cards, trips, and Ryan’s personal debts.
There was no dramatic immediate arrest. Evelyn had voluntarily transferred much of the money, making the legal and financial questions more complicated than simple theft.
However, records suggested Ryan repeatedly misrepresented why he needed specific amounts. Evelyn pursued those disputes through attorneys while reconsidering every financial conversation they had shared.
Laura filed for divorce. Megan ended her relationship with Ryan. For the first time, both women eventually sat together somewhere without Ryan controlling the conversation.
“I hated you,” Laura admitted. Megan nodded and confessed she believed Laura was the stubborn wife deliberately refusing to sign long-promised divorce papers.
“He told you that?” Laura asked. Megan almost laughed. “For three years.” Laura shook her head. “He told me he was working late.”
Their conversation was uncomfortable, but comparing stories accomplished what years of suspicion never could. Ryan’s carefully separated versions of reality could no longer survive contact.
