Chapter 1 - The Bowl Across Her Face

The bowl struck Eleanor Hayes directly across the face, sending rice and gravy across the dining table before the sixty-three-year-old woman fell backward against her chair.

Her daughter-in-law, Cassandra, immediately snatched the spoon from Eleanor’s trembling fingers and threw it onto the marble floor beneath the enormous dining table.

“You can’t even feed yourself?” Cassandra snapped, pointing at Eleanor while several guests stared silently from their seats inside the luxurious Connecticut mansion.

Eleanor raised one shaking hand and slowly wiped rice from her cheek, fighting tears as her fingers refused to obey the simplest movements anymore.

When Eleanor leaned down for the spoon, Cassandra kicked it farther away, then pulled the remaining food beyond her reach and dropped a napkin beside her shoes.

“Clean it yourself,” Cassandra ordered. Eleanor gripped the table and attempted to stand, but her knees suddenly weakened, dropping her heavily back into the chair.

Cassandra watched with open disgust. For months, Eleanor’s worsening tremors had irritated her, especially whenever wealthy friends or business associates visited their home.

Tonight, Cassandra had invited investors to dinner, and Eleanor’s shaking hands had spilled a little gravy across the expensive tablecloth Cassandra imported from Italy.

Eleanor suddenly reached forward and closed her trembling fingers around Cassandra’s wrist, looking directly into her daughter-in-law’s eyes for the first time that evening.

“Call your husband,” Eleanor whispered. Cassandra laughed and asked why, expecting another desperate attempt to escape responsibility for embarrassing her during dinner.

Eleanor looked down at her uncontrollably trembling hands. “Ask him what happened to me the night you two got married.” Cassandra’s smile disappeared instantly.
