Mother-in-Law Forced Her Soldier Son’s Wife to Clean Her Boots—Then the Farm Documents Revealed Who Had Control

Chapter 1 - Clean My Boots, You Common Girl

“Clean my boots, you common girl.” Carol Whitmore planted one muddy boot on the wooden step while twenty-six-year-old Ashley knelt below with an old towel.

Only six weeks earlier, Ashley had married Carol’s son, Staff Sergeant Ethan Whitmore. Now Ethan was deployed overseas, and his mother’s behavior had grown increasingly cruel.

Ashley had already cleaned the boots twice. Carol deliberately kicked more mud across one toe and ordered her daughter-in-law to start over again.

The Whitmore farm covered nearly two hundred acres of Virginia countryside. Ethan grew up there, and his father Robert worked the land until dying three years earlier.

Carol treated the farm like a private kingdom. Ashley, whose parents were an auto mechanic and grocery-store employee, was someone she considered beneath the Whitmore family.

Ashley had paid her own way through community college before becoming a veterinary technician. None of that mattered whenever Carol wanted to remind her of class differences.

“My son could have married anyone,” Carol said. Ashley squeezed the towel and answered quietly, “He married me.” Carol’s expression hardened immediately.

“That doesn’t mean you belong here.” Carol reached toward a large flowerpot filled with dirty rainwater and suddenly tipped it over Ashley’s head.

Muddy water soaked Ashley’s hair, face, and blouse. Carol smiled and demanded an apology for what she called convincing Ethan to marry beneath himself.

Ashley slowly stood. “You want me to apologize for loving your son?” Carol stepped closer and promised Ethan would eventually understand what Ashley truly was.

Before Ashley could answer, a deep bark came from behind the barn. A large German Shepherd burst through the open kennel gate and raced toward them.

Max stopped directly between the women, his body rigid as a low growl came from his throat. Carol stumbled backward and screamed for Ashley to control him.
