Chapter 5 - The Longest Hours of My Life
I drove Emily directly to the hospital, terrified that the stress and physical confrontation might have harmed Noah even though she insisted she could still feel movement.
Those hours became the longest of my life as doctors examined Emily, monitored our son, and repeatedly reminded us they needed time before giving reassurance.
Eventually, a doctor returned and told us Noah appeared stable, although Emily needed rest, follow-up appointments, and careful monitoring through the remainder of her pregnancy.
Only then did I finally breathe normally. Sitting beside Emily’s hospital bed that night, I apologized for failing to recognize how deeply my family resented her.
“You couldn’t know they would do this,” Emily said. I understood, but that did not erase all the smaller warning signs I had previously dismissed.
Emily squeezed my hand. “I don’t care about twelve million dollars, Daniel. I never did.” Her voice became softer when she mentioned our unborn son.
“I want Noah surrounded by people who love him more than they love whatever belongs to him.” I knew immediately I would remember those words forever.
Over the following days, we gave every document to our attorney and cooperated with investigators while refusing to speculate about consequences that authorities had not determined.
We changed our locks, removed my relatives’ access to the property, and established that future contact would happen only under boundaries Emily and I created together.
Our attorney confirmed the attempted documents had not changed Noah’s trust. My grandfather’s original arrangement remained intact for the child it was intended to benefit.
Yet after watching Emily inside that hospital room, twelve million dollars suddenly seemed insignificant compared with the possibility that I could have lost my family.
